State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi held a separate talk with Mr Moon Jae-in, the visiting President of Republic of Korea, at the Envoys Hall of the Presidential Palace in Nay Pyi Taw on 3 September 2019.

They then attended a bilateral meeting of the two countries, which was held at the Meeting Hall at the same venue.

The meeting focused on promotion of friendly relations between the two countries, cooperation in the sectors of culture, education, trade, investment, infrastructure, energy, currency and finance, further assistance of experience and technologies in Myanmar agricultural sector, establishment of an information center to facilitate ROK’s investments in Myanmar, cooperation in conservation of environment and biodiversity, promotion of tourism, one year extension of visa exemption for the visitors from ROK, Myanmar’s active support in ASEAN-ROK and ASEAN-Mekong cooperation, state-level participation of Myanmar in the 30th anniversary of the ASEAN-ROK Dialogue Relations and the first Mekong-Korea Summit which will be held in Busan in November this year, digital display of cultural and scenic views of Bagan, which has recently been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status, at the ASEAN Culture House in Busan to create awareness about Myanmar among the Korean people, possible assistance of ROK in celebrating the 100 years anniversary of Yangon University, ROK support to the efforts of Myanmar government in Rakhine issue, ceremony to establish Korea-Myanmar Industrial Complex in Yangon, and recruitment of more Myanmar migrant workers to work in ROK.

Together with the State Counsellor, the meeting was also attended by Union Ministers U Kyaw Tint Swe, Dr Pe Myint, U Min Thu, U Thant Sin Maung, Dr Than Myint, Dr Myo Thein Gyi, U Soe Win, U Thaung Tun and U Kyaw Tin, Myanmar Ambassador to ROK U Thant Sin and ROK’s Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Lee Sang-hwa.

After the discussion, the State Counsellor and the President of ROK witnessed the signing ceremony of MoU between the two countries.

Union Minister for Investment and Foreign Economic Relations U Thaung Tun and ROK’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Ms Kang Kyung-wha signed an agreement on loan framework for cooperation in economic development from 2018 to 2022. Union Minister for Commerce Dr Than Myint and ROK’s Trade Minister Ms Yoo Myung-hee signed an MoU for the establishment of information center in Yangon to facilitate ROK’s investment in Myanmar.

Union Minister for Transport and Communications U Thant Sin Maung and ROK’s Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Lee Sang-hwa signed an MoU for cooperation in shipping line, upgrading shipyards, transport and construction and management in the docks.

Union Minister for Education Dr Myo Thein Gyi and the ROK’s Ambassador also signed an MoU for cooperation in science and technology. Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Industry U Ko Ko Lwin and the ROK Ambassador signed an MoU for cooperation in emerging businesses and innovation sector.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs of ROK handed over 60 school buses to the Union Minister for Education.

Later, the State Counsellor and the ROK President attended the press conference at the Presidential Palace.

At the Press Conference, the State Counsellor briefed on signing MoUs, visa exemption for the visitors from ROK, support of Myanmar in peacemaking efforts in the Korean peninsula and the donation of 60 school buses to Myanmar.

President Mr Moon Jae-in also said the same history of ROK and Myanmar in democracy movement, donation of rice from Myanmar to ROK after the Korean war, future support for infrastructural development of Myanmar, trade promotion between the two countries and encouragements to Korean business firms to do investment in the Korea-Myanmar Industrial Complex.

After the press conference, the State Counsellor and the ROK President observed the school buses donated to the Ministry of Education.
