Union Minister U Kyaw Tint Swe inaugurates Myanmar Embassy in Havana on 4 October 2019

Union Minister for the Office of the State Counsellor of Myanmar U Kyaw Tint Swe as Special Envoy of the Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar paid an official visit to the Republic of Cuba from 2 to 5 October 2019.

During the visit, he called on Mr. Roberto Morales Ojeda, Vice President of the Councils of State and Ministers of the Republic of Cuba at the Palace of the Revolution on 3 October and had the meetings with Mr. Jose Angel Portal Miranda, Minister of Public Health of Cuba, and Mr. Bruno Eduardo Rodriguez Parrilla, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, at their offices on 3 October and 4 October, respectively.

At the meeting with the Vice-President, they cordially discussed matters pertaining to the political and economic developments in Myanmar and Cuba and promotion of bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries especially in the area of health. The Union Minister also informed the Vice-President that after his visit to Cuba last year, the Embassy of Myanmar has recently been established in Havana and the launch of the Myanmar Embassy establishment would take place on 4 October 2019.

The Union Minister and the Minister of Public Health discussed ways and opportunities to enhance cooperation in health sector, particularly in the areas of pharmaceutical industry, human resource development and research. At the meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the two Ministers exchanged views on further consolidating the traditional ties of friendly relations and cooperation, promoting trade and economic cooperation between the two countries as well as in the health sector, enhancing contacts between Myanmar and Cuba and the Myanmar Government’s efforts to achieve peace, stability and national reconciliation in Rakhine State. He expressed his appreciation to the Minister and officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba for their support in establishing Myanmar Embassy in Havana.

In the evening of 4 October 2019, the Union Minister attended the reception to launch the official establishment of Myanmar Embassy in Havana and gave remarks. In his remarks, he stressed that the establishment of Myanmar Embassy reflects the importance of how Myanmar attached her relationship with Cuba and signifies wide opening of windows of opportunities for promotion of bilateral cooperation, trade and investment between the two countries. Mr. Rogelio Sierra Diaz, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba also delivered remarks. Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba and Ambassadors and Heads of Missions of ASEAN member countries and diplomatic corps in Havana attended the event.

The establishment of Myanmar Embassy in Havana will further consolidate the relations and cooperation between the two countries as well as promoting cooperation with the countries in the Caribbean region.

The Union Minister and the delegation left Havana on 5 October 2019.
